SOUTH EAST COATINGS MEETS THE EURO-TUNNEL CHALLENGE.

Kent based South East Coatings Ltd ended Britain's isolation as an island when we were asked to provide anti-slip systems to the shuttle maintenance workshops at the Euro-tunnel complex near Folkestone.

The particular constraints and complexities which the work entailed lead us to seek a very durable and high quality floor coating system, with that in mind we chose to use one of our High Build solvent free Epoxy coatings

We were asked to provide a high performance protection in a clean dust-free environment since the depot deals with one of the most sophisticated locomotives in Europe. Further complications arose when the anti-slip system had to withstand the weight and moving metal wheels of 3.5 ton jacking devices which skimmed the surface by only 3mm.

South East Coating response was to recommend High Build solvent free floor-coating system, which is impervious to water and resistant to a wide range of chemicals (including hydraulic oils).

Every care was taken by South East Coatings to ensure that the full potential of the High Build was realised in the installation of this system, and with added silica carbide as the anti-slip medium this gave an extremely hard wearing surface.

Colour-coding was used throughout the complex, red denoting the main work area; yellow and black hatching around work pit denoting hazardous area, green for safe walkways. Walls of the pit were coated white, with the steps and floors treated with a anti-slip system.

The Brief
London Underground have many ore First World War buildings and sheds. Ealing Common depot is just one of them. Ealing Common managers required a tough work surface in their lifting sheds, that could be easily cleaned.

The SEC solution
SEC recommended a Thortex Floor-tech IS Epoxy Screed. During the preperation period of the road areas as much as 400mm of material were required to be removed. These areas were then filled with a Fondu Lafarge system in staggered areas and then topped with the Thortex Floor-tech IS Epoxy Screed system with sealer.
